In Reply To: Yes, these cycles are common in the business. I've had 30 and 60 day notices early on. Then I've had 90 days. Depending on how much leverage you have you may be able to get these cycles eliminated or stretched longer than one year. Remember, they can always take you off the air and even tell you to never come back as long as they pay you. I've never had a contract that didn't say something like paying me fulfilled their obligation. My advice, not worth bringing this up until its time to negotiate another contract. If you want out and have not "outs" in the contract, you can ask, but no guarantees.
Message: How management treats the people in this business. If anohter industry pulled the same crap on their people, TV news would be all over it. Somehow our indiscretions don't seem to get covered. Stations sign people to five year contracts with outs each year, if not more often. That means you sign one contract and are bound the entire five years...but the station has a series of five or ten options they can exercise any time. It is so completely unfair to the people who are trying to build a career and can get cut at any time for no good reason.
