In Reply To: You are a newbie...they take the time to train you in the procedures at their station, they groom you and make you a better reporter and you sign a contract with them for some job security. They have invested a lot in your development and training so losing you hits them in the pocketbook and in on air quality (when others have to work harder because they are down a reporter). Contracts are not a tit-for-tat thing. Just because they have a 90-day grace period doesn't mean you should have one. If you really hate where you are, talk to your ND and tell him or her that you want to leave. I'm sure they don't want someone unhappy working for them who will bring down morale throughout the office. And if you are just stirring up this pot because one of the other guys in the office thinks it's unfair, then stop it now. There are a lot of bittier complainers in this industry and they do their best to bring others down to their level. There was nothing sneaky or underhanded in the contract you signed...nothing illegal. For someone who wants to move on without any problems it sucks, but it IS a contract that you signed. You did not have to sign it...you could have waited for an offer without a contract. There are still some out there.
Message: In fact, NBC boilerplate language gives the network a window every four weeks. Now that's harsh. And no, talent rarely has the chance to use a window the same way management can. Just live with it. And get used to it.
