curious story... |

So, if you haven't heard by now, there are reports that while in Georgia (not the U.S. state fer pete's sake!), something being called a "grenade" was lobbed at the prez.
The way this is being reported (I haven't seen the secret service's press release or statement on it myself), the secret service says it was notified AFTER W left Georgia that someone threw something that landed within a couple hundred feet (I've heard 100, 200, 300 and "several hundred") of where he was speaking.
The Secret Service says that they were notified that Georgian security saw the thing land and then they carried it away.
Further the Sec. Service says they weren't notified until AFTER the prez left.. I've heard various reports that it was "two hours" and "a few hours" after W left before the secret service was told about this.
They have not confirmed it.
Certainly troubling if it's true. I hope we learn about the veracity of the story.
Something I find very curious: If something like that actually happened, is the secret service actually admitting that none of their agents SAW it? And if they didn't, what are they doing about how they handle security for the president when they are in other countries? Do they have a protocol by which other security services are expected to behave? I would bet there is one. Was it breached? What's being done to find out?
Further, I find it interesting that this story comes out before the secret servies has even confirmed whether or not the information is valid. That seems unusual. It's not every day that the secret service OFFERS information like that.
I hope we find out definitively: what the thrown object was. Whether it could've done harm. Who threw it. Why. And the answers to the questions raised by my observations above.
But in the meantime, I'm sure all we'll get is breathless blathering... Weak comments by the left about how that sure is serious if it's true. And flag-waving attempts by the right to curry favor for W by painting him the survivor of an assassination attempt.
sigh...
I think I've summed up the next 48 hours to two weeks on TV news.. Now I don't have to watch it.
