How about calling the station where you interned and ask about making a tape. They might let you have a little time in the studio/field.
You could try to set up another internship at a station where you're living now to make tapes, just while you're looking for a job. Or even try to get an entry level off air job somewhere that will let you make tapes.
It seems like you should be able to get this done for free. |

That latter option sounds better than going to my former station. Unfortunately I got caught in the middle of lack of communication from my intern supervisor who offered me the flexibility to produce a tape but the assignment editors had another plan.
