You CAN refuse a story, if you have a good reason, IF you have a great track record. That means being a hard worker, who'll do anything asked of him...the "go-to" guy (girl) if you will.
And FYI, I HAVE refused to do certain stories, because of conflicts of interest; I gave minimal explanation, and never had a problem. But I had a track record... |

Don't be ashamed of yourself. You are taking a giant, productive step towards getting better.
I'm sure you've already figured out that addiction is a cover for cowardice. 12 stepping is the bravest, most healthy thing a person can do for themselves.
I know many respectable journalists who have battled with alcoholism and drugs, been open about it, and have won the hearts and praise of those around them.
Anonymous, like one poster said, is a real thing. You deserve your privacy. BUT having said that, it's not there so you can hide behind it in shame. You are one of the bravest of the brave.
It's the addicts who go their whole lives, taking advantage of people, and self destructing in their careers, relationships and lives in general that should widdle away in shame. NOT YOU.
Good luck with your story and your fight towards the bright side. It's out there...I promise you it is.
