I have been assigned to do a story on an addiction that I am in recovery for. On the one hand, I know more about it than anyone. On the other, I am intimitely involved in the story. I really do not want to disclose something I consider so personal, but I also don't want to do something when there's a conflict of interest. Advice? |

I disagree with most of these people here-
I believe you would be leveling the field and getting it out in the open-
If your reporting on it, then you need to show your objectivity by reporting the facts- and the fact is: your history.
Stories on Smoking by a reporter that smokes? To be fair, that reporter should make it known in their report.
Same for infidelity, and any other topic.
Of course, that's in a perfect journalism world.
Regarding your ND-- Put the story together with your admission and let them watch it. Look at their face as they see it. I think the ND would appreciate the objectivity, the personal angle, and the chance to put something hard hitting on the air.
Good luck with the story and the steps. They've been working for me.
