my first year at UO i took a management class.
A central point was that employees are not primarily motivated by salary.
They are motivated by peer pressure and the common good of their union counterparts.
Being the best paid reporter in Portland means you are paid more than other TV reporters, but less than the average car salesman at Tonkin.
I guess the pay scale for a managing editor is better.
my point? Management rules and the worker bees drool.
I listen to your employees. They aint happy.
No one has forgotten what happened to a couple reporters during negotiations last contract. And the photogs. sheesh.
Save the management flag waving.
When Tracy B hits retirement, the big 8 will start to sink fast.
and it will be time for Rausch to strike.
By the way the if you dont like it leave motto was a favorite of Herr Charles Moose during his dictatorship of the PPB.
Didnt work for him, but good luck mr duck. |

Maybe we should get together for a beer sometime because my fingers would cramp trying to adequately respond to your last post. I'll try to be brief.
Personally, I come to work each day to try to do a better job than I did yesterday - that's my main motivation.. maybe you and your UO professor are different.
The average car salesman gripes about his boss too. Please point me to the workplace where the boss is loved and all the "worker bees" are happy. BTW, I would seriously doubt the "average" car salesman at Tonkin makes more than KGW's highest paid reporters. Possible? yes.. not sure its true though.
I'm not waving the management flag twrecks. I'm saying -- at some point take control of your life and your happiness. If you're so miserable that you're posting on message boards and griping to your competitors in the field, find a better situation for yourself, whether it's another station or another line of work. I'm not directing this at only you but at all your fellow complainers at KGW and elsewhere. KGW is a good newsroom in a good city. I believe most people there feel that way. Are there problems? absolutely. But if you want to work in TV news in Portland - there's no better place.
