Do the story and don??t tell management a damn thing. Bizradio is right..these people are not your friends. They??ll use it against you come contract renewal time. You??ll say, ?? I did this and this?? and she /he will say ??Yah but you??re an admitted addict.
Come on, how many times have we all done stories that we didn??t want to do. We are reporters. but.. hell we can act with the best of them too. Like owning the copy, do some acting and sell the piece and never tell management anything that you??ll later regret.

You should do the story because of your unique insight. But you will need to cover your a**. Two ways: Don't tell but make sure your piece is subject to thorough copyediting by the ND at the very least. Ask him/her if they think it's objective enough and represents all sides. - OR - Tell them and either do or don't do the story but document document document your conversation. Getting rid of you or altering your career in any way due to your disclosure/health issue is a lawsuit waiting to happen..esp if you have asked to be removed from a potential conflict of interest.
