...I work in a top five market now and would gladly go back to my previous small market job. I loved it. The city was great, the work was great. The pay, however, was NOT great -- but the cost of living not bad either. On the flip side, I make three times what I previously made, while at the same time I pay out the a** to live here in the "Big City". Which is better? It is all a matter of personal preference. Me? I've found I prefer the simpler life I once had.
I left, despite a very happy life in small market America, because so often you get pushed to feel like that is what you are "supposed to do" in this business. That is, move up and up for more money and a bigger city.
I want to also add that I think all the prvious posts are very well-stated and make excellent points. It isnt about talent so often anymore -- that is across the board in all TV news markets. Now, it's about who fits the demographic, who is the right color, etc. We have some real stinkers in this so-called "Big Market" I'm currently in. And I worked with some amazingly talented people in my last small market.
That's my take.
