In Reply To: More money means more applicants for openings. The larger talent pool means picking the best of the best as opposed to picking the best of "what's available". Ability and salary are not always tied together. I know some really talented people working in small markets making peanuts compared to some highly over-rated big market "talent" who would go broke if they were paid according to their talent level.
Message: who the news director thinks can put asses in the seats. Sometimes, these are anchors with extraordinary talent. Other times these are anchors who merely look the part, or have the right surname based on demographics. Let's not forget the anchors who may not be as capable as they once were, yet still attract viewers because they are familiar faces. It's all about the ratings. While on-air types have their egos gratified by appearing on television day in and day out, news directors get their strokes by believing THEY have the eye for putting just the right faces on the tube to garner numbers. How many times have you heard of Kelly Jo Corncob being plucked out of Bumfuck Idaho to head to the bigs? Undoubtedly, there was a news director or GM who fancies him or herself a starmaker behind that manuever. I know. I am Kelly Jo Corncob, and I approve this message.
