Do the damn story and keep you mouth shut.
I'm a former smoker. I did tons of smoking stories about how bad it was and then puffed away.
I've done stories about drinking and driving. Done that in my youth.
Done stories about risky sex. Done that a couple times.
Come on people. Get over yourselves.
And keep your mouth shut to management!! As soon as they hear your "conflict" you're branded as a whiner and complainer and expendeble! |

"Do the damn story and keep your mouth shut" ??
BeeV, 12 step isn't the same as smoking. The legal and employment dangers others mentioned are real.
More importantly, it's a conflict of interest, not something you gut out.
Most of us have faced assignments requiring judgement calls. I was asked to front a piece I found repugnant, something being done only for salacious sweep content and without real news value. I took special care to protect myself and the station from possible landminds, and the EP concluded I was a pain in the ass, but bottom line -- it's my reputation, and my career, even if the station didn't care -- and the questions I had were valid and worth addressing. When these things blow up, they make a huge impact -- ask Dan Rather.
The "Family matter" suggestion above seems the best course.
Maybe if more people respected legitimate conflicts of interest, starting with their own mind, there might be more to respect.
This is an interesting thread, though, and although jbown probably had to make the call and move on already, hopefully they'll tell us their decision and response.
