If staying close to Austin is important, then by all means check them all out.
Midland-Odessa is a bit further away and a tad bleak, but actually a pretty good starter market.

Ft Hood definately a good way to start understanding about coverin the military... that will be a story for a while.
And I believe the Prez drops in just down the road.
Good way to meet some of the network folks. Maybe even pick up some "intern" time with them on your days off.
And there are a couple of awesome barbeque spots...holes in the wall... with great food.
