In Reply To: I have been assigned to do a story on an addiction that I am in recovery for. On the one hand, I know more about it than anyone. On the other, I am intimitely involved in the story. I really do not want to disclose something I consider so personal, but I also don't want to do something when there's a conflict of interest. Advice?
Message: I don't think you need to share with your news director anything about your recovery. First, it's a personal health issue. Second, if you tell this person and he/she doesn't fully comprehend the complexsity of the issue or is insensitive to it, than what have you gained. Go do the story. Add some personal compassion. Go on your way. Also, don't tell anyone else about the problem.
