I have to agree with bjorn50 that the best place is the one that will give you a chance.
My first gig was in a 137 as an Assignments Ed, and it sucked. News Director on crack and so much crime you didn't want to go out after dark.
The pasific northwest is a great place to get your feet under you. Good people and micro-breweries abound. I've heard Missoula mentioned more than once on this thread but I have to disagree with that. I went to college there and I've seen the crap that passes for news at both KECI and KPAX, plus the U provides an endless stream of kids willing to do the job for next to nothing.
I would have to second Yakima, or Spokane if you can get in there. But no matter where you start just learn all you can from those around you. |

Missoula is one of the better starter markets in the entire country. In the 6 years I worked there I saw much improvement in the news product both KECI and KPAX put out. I am biased about KECI since I worked there. I'll admit the UM J-School produces a lot people who end up staying to work in Missoula... but many have gone out and started in bigger and sometimes better places. Missoula has a lot of outdoor opportunites to offer except when the world is ablaze in fire season. Nightlife there can become stagnant.
