In Reply To: There maybe doesn't need to be a remote. But the story is not "hey look - rents are going up again, big surprise." It's all about HOW MUCH they are going to increase. Landlords argued for more than 10% this year, largely citing fuel costs. The majority of NYC apartments under $2000/month in normal renting buildings are rent-stabilized. I, for one, eaglerly opened the paper this AM to find out the board's #. I should have remembered that in a mayoral election year, the rent hike is almost always quite moderate.
Message: News flash. Most cities/states have laws regulating the amount rents can increase in a 12 month period. THIS IS NOT NEWS. Rents go up usually when your lease is up and most landlords, no matter where you live, will take the maximum the law allows. Of course, if owners like you as a tenant, they're going to maybe cut you some slack if they don't want you to leave. It's a pain to clean and re-lease an apartment because as an owner you're dealing with a new unknown. You don't know how these new people will trash your property or if they'll pay on time. New York is just warped when it comes to this area. They need to ditch the rent controls and the board. What would happen is rents overall would probably come down. Though the rent control people sitting in $250 a month apartments will be weeping and wailing. But, this is not news. Unless you pick the angle of reporting on why New York is so out of step with the rest of the country in this particular area.
