Message: If the ND's on your side in this, then the odds shift considerably in your favor. I guarantee that the GM will, before making the final decision, have a chat with the ND about your situation. Among the items they'll discuss: How hard will you be to replace? Is there someone in the building ready to step up, or will they have to do an outside search for a new chief? What message does letting you out of your contract send to the rest of the staff? How much consideration should they give to your four years of faithful service? Does the entire newsroom know that you're trying to break your contract? There are also some questions for you to consider: Are you single? If not, how ingrained is your family in the community? Ultimately, working weekends sucks. If you've got a nice gig going, you're comfortable, respected, and you're able to live on the money you're making, do you really want to be a second-tier player with a lousy schedule in a much larger pond? Aassuming the answer the the preceding question is yes, then (going back to my original point) make sure the ND is on your side in this. If he/she is, then your task will be a lot easier. Not easy, but easier. Good luck.
