In Reply To: You are going to find that people either love or hate agents, there is no medium ground here. I had an agent about a year ago and he didn't do much for me at all. He rarely returned my calls and I never knew where he was sending my tapes. After about three years of paying him 3% of my salary ($3,000+ later) he didn't deliver when called upon. Make sure the contract states you only have to pay him/her only if he/she finds you a new job. You shouldn't have to pay them a cent otherwise! I have friends who swear by their agents, so they're not all bad, there are some good ones out there. Just make sure they are one of the good ones by asking them a million questions.
Message: I've read and heard the pros and cons of having an agent but took the plunge and signed a few months ago. So far, so good. He keeps me updated on where tapes go and what he hears back. I spoke with some of his clients and they all were happy. No money out of my pocket until he finds a job for me ... which as redrocks points out - is how it should be. Of course true test will be if he delivers on a job! I will admit it's very strange not to be in charge of my own job search.
