GMs understand more than you might think. Why not go to him with your news director and take this approach: "I love it here, you guys have been good to me, blah, blah, blah... BUT, wouldn't I be making a mistake not to check this out? Wouldn't you, if it were you? May I have your permission to talk with these folks... and if there is an offer, I will consult with you before going any further."
This can set the stage for a reasonable discussion of your obligations and relationship going forward. If the GM immediately takes a hard stance, you know what you are dealing with and can act accordingly. Chances are, he will appreciate the warning that you may be leaving, and can start to plan for that possibility. |
