In Reply To: I have been the Chief Meteorologist at a station in the top 130's market for close to four years. About a year ago we underwent a change in ownership which, as anyone who works in this biz, can be a difficult time. During that time I have been sending out tapes left and right. I was able to survive the ownership transition along with a new General Manager entering the picture. In fact, a raise was offered to me with the promise that more money was on the way as long as I signed a one year extension to my current contract. I signed about a month ago and now make a salary in the lower 40's. I got a call out of the Blue from an O & O station (top 60's) for a weekend weather position offering up a salary in the lower 50's. It's not just the money, but the opportunity to work for an O & O station that has attracted me to this opportunity. My News Director is excited for me but we're not sure how the new G.M. will react. How do I go about asking the G.M. to let me out of my contract for this opportunity? Is it worth risking a good relationship for a job that's not mine just yet? I've got a bright future where I am now but I'll probably never exceed 50k a year as long as I'm here. What to do!?
Message: GMs understand more than you might think. Why not go to him with your news director and take this approach: "I love it here, you guys have been good to me, blah, blah, blah... BUT, wouldn't I be making a mistake not to check this out? Wouldn't you, if it were you? May I have your permission to talk with these folks... and if there is an offer, I will consult with you before going any further." This can set the stage for a reasonable discussion of your obligations and relationship going forward. If the GM immediately takes a hard stance, you know what you are dealing with and can act accordingly. Chances are, he will appreciate the warning that you may be leaving, and can start to plan for that possibility.
