In Reply To: Under normal circumstances no CBS outlet would care about Pat O'Brien. Do you think 60 Minutes or 48 Hours would do an hour with a hack/drunk from an entertainment show? NO. If a more high profile 'host' like Oprah were in trouble everyone would scramble for the 'get', but not in Pat's case. Do you think if Dr. Phil were not tied to Paramount that he would care to interview Pat O'Brien? Of course not. O'Brien might make it on Maury if he were lucky. And would any network take a talk show that is syndicated on various networks during the day and give them a primetime spot? ABC gave Oprah a primetime spot to interview Michael Jackson in '93, but clearly this doesn't compare. Viacom has dictated this move as damage control for "The Insider". They are using Dr. Phil because he can appear 'tough' on O'Brien, when the good Doc will really help Pat will come off as a sympathetic victim of his own human weakness whose willingness to share his experience will help others..blah, blah, blah. He'll be snorting coke by 9pm tonight.
Message: I've been thinking about this for awhile -- but I fear McGraw has jumped the shark with his show this season, in general. Examples: an interview with Drew Barrymore. Face-to-face confrontations with a wife and "the other woman," straight outta Springer. Perhaps the producers are trying to broaden the scope of this show. But to me, they're actually diluting it -- unless Dr. Phil is running out of "ordinary" topics and guests to discuss.
