Message: Oliveira finds new home at KEYE It's deja-KVUE all over again as anchor joins former colleagues Maggio, Cantu. By Diane Holloway AMERICAN-STATESMAN TELEVISION WRITER Tuesday, May 03, 2005 Longtime news anchor Ron Oliveira, who left KVUE in March after contract negotiations with the ABC affiliate collapsed, starts a new job at KEYE today. He's joining former KVUE anchors Fred Cantu and Judy Maggio at the CBS-owned station, though a one-year non-compete clause will keep him behind the scenes in the newsroom until next spring. "I met with the folks at KEYE and CBS shortly after I left KVUE, and negotiations went smoothly," Oliveira said. "I just got treated like a king. The whole package is wonderful." Oliveira would not reveal his salary, but KEYE is known to pay top dollar for top talent. Maggio is believed to be the highest-paid anchor in Austin, although she and the station dispute a previously reported figure of $300,000. They say that's too high but decline to say by how much. Oliveira's on-air debut is planned for March, when he will join Cantu and Maggio in a 5, 6 and 10 p.m. anchor configuration that has yet to be determined. "Fred and Judy are in the loop on this, and they're ecstatic," said Mike Reed, KEYE's general manager. "This is not displacing Fred and Judy in any way. They will continue to anchor, and Ron will join them. This is the stuff that championship teams are made of." Oliveira, 49, is a University of Texas graduate who has anchored in Austin for most of the past 25 years, primarily at KVUE. He anchored at KXAN from '95 to '99 and is part-owner of KNVA, Austin's WB affiliate. "It's funny. Anywhere I went in town for the past two months, people asked when I was going to KEYE," Oliveira said. "I did a lot of fishing and went to the gym three or four times a week while I was off, but I'm really excited to be going back to work." KEYE is usually third in local news ratings, behind KVUE and KXAN, but the numbers have improved since Cantu and Maggio joined the station in 2003. dholloway@statesman.com; 445-3608
