Both have their perks but I'd advise you to do some soul searching.
How will taking one schedule effect family life, assuming you have an immediate family? How bad do you really need the extra money? Can you live without the extra dough for the sake of family and life away from work?
There is no easy answer here. This is something you'll really need to dig deep to find within yourself.

I think a lot would depend on the quality of the news product and the equipment you'd have to use.
If the smaller market is much worse, then maybe weekends at a mid market is better.
Also, if you're fairly new to the business ask yourself are you really ready for the responisbilities that come with chief or would you be better off learning more in a bigger market first.
There are pros and cons to both.
