In Reply To: Adding a little drama and a few "sexy" stories help keep people around. You can have the best tease about North Korea and Iraq attacks all you want. But, a lot of people just don't care anymore... unless you say the attacks are coming over here. The fact that all of these people are on this message board fired up about this story says to me that it should continue to be in the newscast. Isn't this what we do? We not only inform people about their community and safety, but we add stories that get people talking? Perhaps they'll tune back in and say "hmm, I wonder what's happening with her now?" I work in a market where there's lots of local news. Police chase, baby murdered, police officer attacked... etc. But, the runaway bride was the story EVERYONE was talking about in our newsroom. And that's sometimes a clear indication of what others are thinking. We, journalists, are regular people too, right? What do you think?
Message: Double check the conversations going on around the station. How many people were talking about the missing bride Friday morning vs how many people were talking about Survivor vs how many people were talking about what the President of the United States had to say? If we want to call ourselves journalists we should be looking into what the President had to offer. How many men, women and children go missing every day in America? How many missing children stories do you run in your newscast? If I use your standards I should run an update of Survivor even if I don't work for a CBS station.
