In Reply To: As a local reporter covering -- or trying to cover -- this story since Wednesday, let me tell you it was a textbook example of the cable news and morning shows out of control. One cable net crew told me they were covering it only because a competitor had been hyping it up. One-by-one they tried to out-"get" each other, pushing up the stakes in the story even higher as the hours went by. For a reporter covering news in this community for years, it was ridiculous. As sad of a commentary it is for the state of our business, the even sadder aspect was the way it effected local law enforcement's decisions. Only because of the intense attention did the Police Chief reluctantly declare this a criminal case and conduct an unprecedented search for a missing adult in a situation with "no signs of a crime being committed." I guarantee you that in 99-of-100 similar cases, local cops would wait at least 24 hours, or even longer, before even paying attention to it.
Message: My opinion: Fox News Channel ruined what was legit about broadcast news.
