In Reply To: How far has this business sunk to have the morons running news departments turn employment into a game show? How desperate are people to get TV jobs that they will allow their lives and careers to be turned into a ratings gimmick? This is like one of those old westerns where the town drunk dances for whiskey money. Experienced and educated professionals should not be subjected to a contest judged by an audience looking for a localized version of "American Idol". It's tough enough trying to get noticed by incompetent ND's who don't know their ass from a hole in the ground, but to be in a contest where the ultimate winner will be the woman with the largest boobs or the guy with the dumbest wisecrack, no thanks. I wish these people would pull out their last shred of dignity and give management the Jon Stewart line, "I'M...NOT...YOUR...MONKEY!" If management wants to do off air focus groups or intense interviewing, fine. But handing off such a big responsibility to viewers is just plain stupid. What if the viewers pick someone who turns out to be terrible? KTLA hired their weatherperson through auditions, advertising that appicants need NO prior broadcast experience. In the #2 market!!! They ended up hiring an actor from Scotland. No wonder this business has lost so much trust with the public. How about firing the dumb ass ND at the station and letting the newsroom pick someone who has a triple digit IQ?
Message: Let's all relax and remember that we're talking about a weekend weather job in Phoenix. I don't think there's a city in America (except perhaps L.A.) that requires less experience at weather in order to get on the air. And so what. Have you ever been to Phoenix? I have. Spent several years there, in fact. Do you know what people care about there? The same thing every viewer in America cares about: what's the temperature supposed to be tomorrow, and is it going to rain? That's IT. Just about ANY appealing person can deliver that information in Phoenix and do well. It's one of the most personality-driven markets in the country, and if viewers want their weather to come from someone they just plain LIKE, regardless of his or her meteorological depth, then that's what they'll do. Every ND checks the ratings there, and there's plenty of shuffling when needed. Phoenix just isn't that important a weather town. A few summer months with some rippin' t-storms, and that's about it. So don't cry too much about the state of the weather business there or in L.A. You'll always have Tulsa.
