If you've been around the broadcast media for awhile, you could probably answer that already.
Ours has become a cult of personality medium with the focus on celebrities. Don't have one available? Create one! Scott Peterson, all the missing and murdered children, and on and on. How else do O'Reilly, Greta, and the rest of them get to speculate, postulate, and pontificate??? Next!!
Take this board for example. Are there more discussions about content, or about how Katie looked trashed today? The future of journalism, or what _____________ (insert local anchor here) was arrested for, posed in, got pregnant, or had an affair?
Also, isn't it ironic that this poor woman in Atlanta bailed due to pressure, only to have her fiancee cast under suspicion, a handful of sat trucks parking in her front yard, and the nation's attention focused squarely on her?? Ouch. |

you've figured it out.
i have been working in this country, at the number one cable news channel, for the last five years.
and now, i'm heading back to canada.
if you want to understand what makes this superficial country tick -- and if you want to track it's collapse into a superficial pile of irrelevancy --- you need to work in tv news, watch cable tv news .. and monitor the thoughts and priorities about tv news through this board and others like it.
two words: Who cares ? feckless brides, random murderers, missing persons ..
random crimes and misdemeanours. and you waste time and energy covering it, talking about it, and analyzing it.
all the while:
substantial, cataclysmic treasonous assaults are taking place on life and liberty ... and it's all too much trouble (or having too little ratings payoff) to bother with ... or explain.
