Then join NPR or PBS. This is a business. Its about numbers and the bottom line and crying about the days of journalism being a "calling" is overrated. If you are not happy with the business, leave. There are plenty of people willing to take over and "earn a paycheck" which is what the work world has always been about. If you want to blame someone for the current state of journalism, then blame the fickle viewers who prefer reality TV to a presidential news conference. |

...journalism never WAS simply about earning a paycheck. Not sure I'd put it quite so dramatically as you, but, yeah, journalism IS about saving the world...or at least, making a small part of it accountable. Sorry, but it's not just a job; it is a calling, and an honorable one...or at least, it's supposed to be. At least, it used to be.
