Contracts are your word. I agree. You should also try not to burn bridges. But you also have to be realistic. If you are honest with your ND and have a better offer in a larger market most will not stop you. If they try to you then make your choice is it worth wasting an opportunity to advance your career. I know to many people who have been burned in this business. Do you honestly think a station would not dump your contract if it them better. Think about it. I've been told by several lawyers that many of the issues in personal service contracts would never hold up in court esp. non-compete clauses. The reasoning is that a judge would have to rule that they would perfer a journalist draw unemployment rather than allow them to work across the street. It is not legal to force someone to move out of town for them to work. Not to mention that most stations don't have the money to fight or the desire. Why fight for someone who what's to leave? Just look at the track record in some big markets, DC, Atlanta, Detroit...It happens all the time.... |

have taken a very dim view of non-competes..no, it is NOT a right-to-work state.. but, someone above was correct in saying that has nothing to do with a personal services contract..
