Not that I want to make a salary request, but I would rather write something short and sweet.
Wouldn't you ND-types prefer that anyway?
mostly I just grit my teeth and write a bunch of b.s.

Short and sweet is fine. In fact, it is preferable. I love a simple, direct cover letter.
Do you remember that elegant sentence in Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style?"
"Omit needless words."
