In Reply To: I've been in the same boat before. Do what is right for you!!!! Most contracts would never hold up in court anyway. Even the non-compete parts are BS. I've had lawyers look into everything for me. Just be upfront and honest if you get an opportunity to move up in markets. Offer to give 30-60 days notice. Tell them that you'll help train your replacement. Trust me, if a station were to find someone that suited their needs better than you you'd be history, contract or no contract.
Message: ...as is said here often, remember, a contract (that YOU signed) is YOUR WORD. How good is your word? Do you have a job offer from a large market? If you don't, then don't put the cart before the horse. Are you applying to a large market from your small market? Unless you're getting real interest, don't worry about it. The things you SHOULD worry about -- and this is not knowing what size market you're in or are looking to move to -- but if the jump is a really big jump, ask yourself (and try to be honest) why they're looking at you. Are you really good or are they looking for cheap labor? Are you doing yourself a favor by jumping in with the big dogs if you're not really ready? That could hurt your career more than you know. You don't say what the terms of your contract are (2 year, 3 year) or how far into it you are (6 months, 6 months left). I agree that you should take it to a lawyer to have them look at your options. But this is a big lesson to anyone -- READ THE CONTRACT AND GO OVER IT WITH A LAWYER ***BEFORE YOU SIGN. Work your outs before you sign (top 30, top 50, top 70 out -- will give 30-60 days notice, sit through in upcoming book if it's close to a book). The time to question a contract is before you sign, not mid-way. And be honorable about it -- it's a small business. Word will get around if you aren't. And Disneyfreaks advice that "Most contracts would never hold up in court anyway" may not be true where you work.
