Then wait until that suit you've been eyeing is marked down three times and buy it at a 30% off redlines sale. Most mall stores are great for this -- Casual Corner, Ann Taylor, Kasper suits anywhere.
And learn to sew. Not to make your own clothes, but to alter a great-looking sale item to your own size. I have a hard time fitting my body type (big shoulders, big hips, tiny waist) and found I could buy a 12 or 14 skirt on sale for $5 and take it in/re-sew it to a size 6-8. Saved me a bundle, and folks often remark how great my clothes fit me.
You can even try buying a good-looking skirt with the matching great-looking blouse or cardigan (worthy of on-air by itself) to save money, then buy the jacket at a fire-sale price later on when all the matching pieces are gone. Cool trick but you don't always get lucky.
