Sorry to have use the name "Anonymous", but I'm a 1L from UT (this past year), clerking for a firm and wanted to relieve the anxieties of the previous 'anonymous'. Working as a paralegal will not really help your application to Law School, nor will it honestly give you much of a glimpse into the life of the lawyer.
I would echo the suggestions of finding public interest places. Also try publishers of legal books (I worked at one during college; it turned out to be useful resume stuff and fun!), professors of legal related things (history, government), and any government experience you can.
But don't worry. Paralegals (and other firm jobs you could get) are not at all prestige-based -- as for legal clerkships, that's a different thing -- they are just filling the firm's need for more menial workers.
Best of luck,

Hi, thanks for the two latest replies. In response to "this string", I have two questions: how can I find jobs such as the one you took with a legal book publisher? Also, what tasks are assigned to legal clerks? Thanks again.
