Un-Conventional Wisdom for the Job Search
by
Richard A. Kosinski
1. Human Resources personnel represent a descending order on the evolutionary scale.
2. The likelihood that you are so special a company will create a job just for you is about as remote as you winning the lottery or getting struck by lightning. (Not impossible, just remote!)
3. The mass mailing of unsolicited resumes will probably just make the U.S. Postal service richer. Direct mail is generally used to either sell you something you really don??t want or to ??beg?? for money. ??Wouldn??t it be great if neediness and desperation were attractive??? Albert Brooks
4. Qualifications being equal, an employed candidate will always be hired over and unemployed candidate. People always want what the other person has. Unemployment always begs the question ??why???
5. A winning personality during the interviewing process will usually win out over competence. An employer wants to work with someone he/she likes. However, personality and competence together are unbeatable.
6. The longer you remain unemployed the tougher it is to get hired. Take the first job offered and continue searching for a better one. The words ????to Present?? are magic on a resume!
7. The job market isn??t booming for everyone. Your specific field may not be one that??s hiring.
8. How you are treated in the interview is a good indication of how you will be treated once you are hired. It doesn??t get better!
9. The job market for the 30-year-old is not the same for the 50-year-old.
10. Just because you know you can do the job doesn??t mean they??ll hire you!
11. If you loved the people you worked with on your last job but hated the nature of the work itself, you should consider changing fields.
12. Commuting times and distance counts! There are only 24 hours in a day. Why spend 3 of them in traffic?
13. Learn to live beneath your means. Plan for long-term unemployment by frugal spending and ardent saving. ??If you want peace (of mind), prepare for war (unemployment)!?? You will also interview better if you are under less pressure. (See also above quote from Albert Brooks.)
Don??t you wish you could approach the interview like this?
??Look, Mr. Smith, I have known myself and my abilities longer than you will ever discover during this interview and I know I am better suited for this position than any of your other candidates. So, let??s cut all this bullshit and give me the f---ing job now. It will be the smartest decision you will make today!??
