In Reply To: Few quick questions to those willing to give some advice: -How important is previous work experience vs. GPA? (i.e. will solid GPA [3.6>GPA>3.7 @ wharton] be enough to land the critical first interview?, or do they expect applicants to have already learned the basics from previous internships) -Any advice on how many resumes to drop? Thanks inadvance for any response, and i hope this thread becomes a vehicle for discussing such internship issues.
Message: I remember this whole process; glad to say I can see the situation from the other side now. It really depends on the type of internship. I can only speak regarding derivatives trading because I've never interviewed nor worked any other job of relevance to this discussion. In response to your first question, a lot of people with those credentials (high academics) are applying for these jobs. That will make sure you don't get intially rejected, but it certainly will not get you the job. Furthermore, depending on the school you are coming from, employers will prorate your grade. (We understand some top notch schools inflate grades, and we account for that.) Prior experience is a plus, but if you are a junior they will understand that. (Remember, if everything works out well, this company is making an investment in a fresh new person who is hungry to succeed and looking for someone to teach them.) Therefore, being your age has its benefits. In regards to your question about how many resumes to drop, the best way to land a job is to make connections, and then drop subtle hints until they ask you for your resume. If you just send resumes to HR directors, they'll probably get ignored (unless it is phenomenal). If you're coming from Wharton, you definitely have a good network to draw upon.
