Trading definitely offers the most potential in terms of money. If you desk does really well you live like a king. If not you still do pretty well. Depending on the product, most traders work 8-10 hours, no nights or weekends. We definitely have the best life of the three.
IB does well when the economy does well i.e. the dotbomb era. As an analyst it's long boring hours running cash flow models and making sure the copy shop does their job correctly. My roommate's in IB at GS and works 50-80 hrs/week depending on deal flow.
Research is a steady paycheck and a nice bonus when you pump up your IB clients. Hours depend on the firm but roughly 8-8 Mon-Fri, weekends as needed.
