It would seem that proprietary trading skills would be useful as a trader for a hedge fund. Isn't hedge fund trading basically the same as proprietary trading, except that the hedge fund would normally be larger and therefore would need to trade in securities with more trading volume and liquidity?

If you're a talented daytrader making money why the heck would you ever go back to a normal job? The goal is to make money, if you're truly talented you will do well. If you aren't talented, going to a bulge bracket or boutique isn't going to make you profitable. Just because you sit on the prop desk at a BB doesn't guarantee profits, just puts a better name on your resume.
