In Reply To: What type of Sell Side experience is most valuable?
Message: The sell-side experience required depends on what area you want to work in. If you want to trade currency and commodity futures, you should probably start in the foreign exchange research/strategy group at a big firm. If you want to do distressed/event-driven stuff, then you may want to try high-yield research, which is the best way to break into distressed debt if you have no credit background. Risk arb is very lslow right now. If you want to do equity long/short, hedge funds like people who are already on the buy-side, but if you have no experience, try sell-side in technology, healthcare, retail, or financial sectors, since these are the major equity classes that hedge funds invest in.
