First, I love Chicago, too. Everyone from Chi-town is so awesome!
While Heartland has a web site that allows you to send your resumes (www.hrld.com), I went through my school's career services office. Heartland came on campus, and I spoke with their representative at length. I guess I really made an impression on him because he turned out to be my interviewer, and he remembered me clearly.
However, I've applied to jobs and internships through web sites, and I've never gotten a SINGLE RESPONSE (other than the computer's auto reply).
Despite Heartland's web site, which seems to imply that you need a certain pedigree to work there, I found that there were plenty of people that didn't go to Top-10 schools that were working there. The company seems to be much more of a meritocracy than BB firms.
As far as breaking into trading, I'm no expert but it seems that an internship is essential. As you've probably read, I interned for free just to get experience.
But the best advice came from alums who are now trading.

thanks for the info teds....really appreciated
as far as experience goes, well...ive interned at an investment management company back in India and managed portfolios for a few clients [By the way, Im from India originally.....but ive taken to Chicago ever since coming here :)] - i dunno if that would really count.
From my experience, ive noticed that work-ex abroad doesnt count for much (although those interviews that i attended for werent S & T positions)
If its not asking for too much - Would you be willing to take a look at my resume and maybe help me out? Or provide me any contact in the HR department?
The reason im asking is - as you had mentioned - turning in resumes on websites dont really yield much. Knowing people/alums makes a difference & i dont have that luxury at UIC!
Anyway...thanks again Teds. looking forward to your reply
