In Reply To: Overseastrader mentioned that in order to get into a respectable graduate school you have to explain * why * you want an MBA, do you have any suggestions? . I am currently and assistant, (not middle office), in fixed income trading, at a top tier firm. I have found that unless you have a connection, an MBA is the only way of advancing in trading. Do you find this to be true, especially in the current market? I want to get on the International Equity Desk and feel that an MBA is the only way to get there. What do you guys think? Anyone?
Message: I have found the trading environment to be relatively insular, and some firms even frown on active traders pursuing MBAs since it does not necessarily apply to their positions. Other firms encourage it, since it leads to better managerial skills which will allow the trader to parlay his or her skills by effectively directing more junior staff. I think *this* is a viable reason to give an interviewer for why you want an MBA -- to be a more effective manager. I am not sure that an MBA is the only way to get onto an International Equity Desk. There are many firms (Headwaters in San Francisco, for example) where the heads of the International desks do not have advanced degrees. Industry experience and a demonstration of your decision-making skills is often more important. Best of luck!
