From my experience, leaving your GPA off your resume will get you dinged immediately. They will assume it is below a 3.0. I didn't leave mine off, which was a 3.5, and I was fine. SLK, as well as other "pure" trading firms, cares less about school prestige then Investment Banks. That being said, GPA is representative of how hard you worked in college. It is not necessarily representative of how intelligent you are. If you really love the market, and love trading, demenstrate it in the interview. I doubt SLK comes to UCLA, so you will have to submit your resume online. After you submit it, call HR and hound them for a first round phone or, better yet, person interview at their HQ. You will have to fly to NY on your own, but if you want a trading job from UCLA, 3.2 or 3.8, you will have to do most first rounds on your own dime if you want to do them in person. If you are succesful at demestrating your abilities and ambitions, you should have no problem getting a job at SLK or anywhere else. The key is how ambitous you are and how much you really want this. Many people applying for the same job have higher GPA's, come from "better" schools then UCLA (I didn't) AND, most importantly, live and breathe the market. Hell, I have CNBC on right now as I type this waiting for a conferance call to begin! |

Thank you for all the advice. I also wanted to know what other good trading firms are out there for people with BA's beside BB firms. I've heard of Barclay, but not much else since trading firms don't recruit from UCLA and I'm doing all my own research.
