In Reply To: I need a career advice. I've been working in the IT industry for a number of years, with last 5 years in the Fixed Income group of IB/IM firms. I obtained a part-time MBA from NYU Stern last year. I couldn??t do any Summer internship because I was working full-time then. I was able to obtain some First round interviews for Derivatives trading positions during campus recruitment. But lack of internship badly hurt my chances and I was competing with Full time students as well as those who were laid of last couple of years. Also, neither the IB nor IM firms were not interested in a career-changer like myself who had significant job experience, albeit not in actual Trading. I have taken CFA Level II this year. I am not sure if that is really going to make any huge difference, but at least it may cause someone to take me seriously. I currently work in European bank supporting FI Middle offices. I am very much interested in IR Derivatives. I like the company but I don??t like this job. I have been with the firm for one year and have been thinking to talk to my boss or HR about this. But I don??t know how to approach this. If anyone has any advice on what to do, I'd appreciate it. Thanks
Message: I'd start by finding out if it's possible to make a move internally. Are there potential openings, has anyone made a somewhat similar move in the not too distant past, etc... After confirming that it is indeed possible, go to someone with hiring authority on the IR derivatives desk and express your interest as well as your skills and knowledge, all prior to speaking with your boss or HR.
