I currently work at a BB firm in their capital markets division, and was recently offered a job at another BB firm doing most of the same thing (with slightly different focus and responsibility) for 33% more in base (and hopefully 33% more in bonus as well). My boss gives me a counter-offer that not only match that 33% increase, but also another $5,000 retention bonus. I like my current firm's culture and people, so I am inclined to take this counter-offer.
Should I take this counter-offer or not? |

As a recruiter for the e-industries, it has been my experience that better than 50% of the people that accept counter offers find themselves out the door in less than 6 months. All to often the company sees the initial interest in another position as an indication of ones loyality. In many cases the attitude seems to be if money can get you to stay then more money can get you to leave. Many companies will begin to quietly look for your replacement as soon as you have accepted the offer.
