If it is one or the other, ask the company to give you the $4,000 in travel expenses instead of a bonus. Track your miles (.325 per mile), gas, hotel, etc. and go back and forth a few times (wink, wink, nudge, nudge). The travel expenses will add up quickly and best of all, the $4,000 is not taxed! (You will lose about half the bonus to taxes b/c its supplemental income, and you'll be in the poor house).
