Two weeks ago, I was informed by my employer that I am scheduled to work New Year's Eve. Having already made non-refundable plans, I explained the situation and offered to work New Year's Day or perhaps earlier in the evening instead. (I never work nights so it never crossed my mind that I would have to consult my employer before planning something.) After several attempts to discuss this with my supervisor, I was essentially told, "Too bad." I'm losing money because I can't find anyone to take my place either at work or at the event I was planning to attend. I am a reporter and understand the need for coverage that night, however, something like this seems as if it should have been discussed long before the beginning of December. Is this my fault for not knowing? Short of finding another job which I have not been able to do (I know something like this is bound to happen again) is there anything else I can do?
