In Reply To: I work for an equipment dealership. I have been in this industry for just under 7 years. I know my ____. I also know that if I were a man, one of the last new positions of stature would be mine - no doubt what so ever. Besides a Sales Representative, I have been over looked as an Equipment Manager, who by the way could not make it a day without my assistance. The above two jobs salary base is about $5500 more than mine and I don't ever want to find out what their commission rate is. How do I figure that if I were a man these opportunites would have been offered to me? It probably stems from the "John Deere" Syndrome of the equipment business. The women can answer the phone, even process your financial documentation - but don't have her startup my machine. So equipment sales to be successful must be done by men. Equipment Manager - this job was created due to business growing pains, 90% of the job was done by me previously and 10% by the Branch Manager, who required my input on the job description. HIS requirement - "a MAN that can get things done". Why should I care, I make the same and 90% of a certain portion has been deligated off to the new comer - because with our growing pains, I perform enough work in my twelve hour days as about 2.5 people. So I am to valuable to replace - no, who is? What I am is stuck. Stuck as a women in a mans establishment, working my ___ off to accomidate all the men above me - no, I am not a Liberal. I cannot understand through all my hard work and dedication why I am constantly looked upon as "the woman in the sales office". Do I not get any opportunities because it is simply expected of me to stay stagnet? Would a sex change help? Probably not my marraige...
Message: I am wondering if you have ever asked for the job you want? If you are doing so much work and helping to create the jobs to replace you or for those promoted over you, you need to make sure your boss knows how you feel. Tell him if he won't promote you you'll go somewhere where they will. I think you have to take some responsibility for your situation. I have always asked for raises and more responsibilty and have never failed to get them - except once and then I left. If you let people treat you like a doormat more fool you. Most businesses want to make money - if you can prove that you can make money and bring in more money you won't hear many complaints.
