For $1200 you can find a small studio in Manhattan - in an okay area. Where is your office going to be? It shouldn't be hard to find a decent place for that rent - but it all depends on the location and availability. There are places within your rent range though - I wouldn't worry about it too much. You might consider moving to Brooklyn Heights or Park Slope for a little more space - they're both just across the bridge from Manhattan. I know people who pay under $500 a month in fairly nice Brooklyn homes- but those are hard to come by and you need roommates to split 2-3 bedroom apartments. It's really all about luck in this city! |

$1200 will get you a small studio in the East Village - forget about Greenwich Village/West Village though. There are also studios on the Upper East Side east of 2nd Ave. that would be within your price range. But - in my opinion - you should try and spend less on rent, because you'll want that extra cash when you're in NYC. Try to hook up with someone in England to live with, or (more risky) look for a sublet to live in while you look for a roommate in the States. I share a small two-bedroom in the East Village and I pay $850 - basically, having a roommate gets you more flexibility about where you live and (probably) a better apartment than you could have afforded on your own.
