Message: When I started my current job in November of last year, I came off a position with 3 weeks of vacation, 4 personal days, and 8 sick days a year. There were some max limits, but they were pretty flexible. In my current position I get 10 vacation days and 6 personal days. The catch is that it's a paid time off system. So, the personal days are actually equivalent to sick days. Had I known this, I would have negoitated more time, I just assumed that I would get an allotment of sick days. Well you know what happens when you assume. Basically I'm looking for a buffer zone, I don't think I'll ever have the occasion to use 3 weeks vacation, but it would good to have if the need arises. My current employer has a use or lose it policy. So, here's my question, when's the best time to negotiate, now or at review time in November? I know from water cooler conversations that the vacation policy is flexible since others in my group get an extra week of vacation as a perk. Here's another nuance, I want to take a series of courses that will lead to a certificate, but since they're not credit, they're not paid for under normal tuition reimbursement. Just talking out loud, looking for opinions. Should I ask for everything, just prioritize, or just be glad I have a job!! lol
