Hi folks,
This discussion seems to be getting very aggressive. I think there is a huge misunderstanding in both sides. Let's just take a deep slow breath, sit down and think logically about this whole situation.
At the current state of the economy, it doesn't seem 'logical' to employ a foreigner over an American, especially in the troubled IT sector. I definitely do agree with the folks who advocate a reduction in H-1B quotas - but only for a temporary period (until the economy picks up again...) We shouldn't forget that these H-1Bs have all played an important role in the development of this nation. They are hard workers (of course, there are some exceptions...), and most important of all, they are highly educated and intelligent people - unlike the unskilled immigrants. So, we shouldn't simply categorize them under the 'cheap labor' field.
However, we should also keep in mind that the sole purpose of this H1-B scheme is to fill out 'unfilled' positions for a temporary period. I don't think it would be wise to state that there are still 200,000 unfilled positions for foreigners out there in the employment market.. There are many unemployed and 'skilled' Americans who are all ready to take up these positions. It would be a much wiser move to limit the H-1Bs to those that are only in 'exceptional cases'... But again, only for a temporary period, until the economy begins to grow again...
We welcome people from all parts of the world, but they should also remember that the priority should always be given to the citizens of this nation.. as in any other country.
We all appreciate your efforts, however our citizens must come first.
