I, along with many others, agree that most HR people and recruiters suck. Why do I say this?
1) Most recruiters are not knowledgeable enough in the field to really qualify you for a job. Candidates are merely a percentage of their salary.
2) Most recruiters advertise false job openings in order to collect your resumes and sell them to others (MY MAIN REASON!!) I think its horrible that people make money off the fact YOU don't have a job and it should be banned!
Why do I feel there are some that are legitimate?
About a year ago, I too was on the market for a job. I completely refused to deal with recruiters and hr people. They were standing in my way of finding a real opportunity. After a few months of frustration, I decided to work from my home. I began offering my tech/admin services on a virtual basis (telecommuting that is). I sent out tons of mailers and one lucky day I received a response from an HR Consultant. This CEO was not looking to assist me in finding a job but needed some administrative assistance as he began his own homebased biz, HR Consulting & Management Coaching. I discoveredd this fellow was also involved in high-tech placement in Silicon Valley. As I became more acquainted with him I began to realize that not all recruiters and HR people are created equal. This fellow has a tremendous desire to help people succeed. The positions he posts are real jobs with real companies. Yes, I too was amazed. I now assist this CEO in his job placement efforts. Is this a sales pitch? No. I dragged this story on to let you know that though the majority usually rules there is still exists a minority that is set apart from the rest.
I will not advertise here! This was just my testimonial.
