HR as Gatekeeper |

I have over 20 years of hr experience. I do feel that HR professionals sometimes take themselves too seriously. There is no reason whatsoever for any person, HR or otherwise, to not treat another human being with dignity and respect.
When it comes to recruiting, the job of HR is to provide candidates to the hiring managers who meet certain specific criteria.
In most cases the hiring manager determine what the criteria is. HR also has some core competencies that it looks for so that the new employees will reinforce the core beliefs that the particular company espouses.
However, it makes my job real easy when the hiring manager identifies a candidate who meets the established criteria. Actually, as long as the candidate helps the company meets its objectives and adds to the diversity of the enterprise, HR should step out of the way and let the process flow.
I enjoy being an HR professional because it challenges you be effective without much of the "legitimate" authority that line managers have by virtue of their position.
To say that "HR sucks" is to be simplistic and stereotypic. Of course we suck, but so does the everyone else. But there are many HR people who make the workplace a lot better than it would otherwise be.
Sorry about the soapbox! |

By calling HR professionals "gatekeepers" you are showing your ignorance of the field and its place as a business partner. You need to learn more about it so you can intelligently critique its function. I suggest an excellent place to begin your study is the Society for Human Resources Management website (www.shrm.org).
By the way, a good HR department will ensure that such "backdoor" tactics as you described are effectively dealt with to ensure that all applicants are treated fairly.
Good luck with your research!
